Dr Woolf is a proud member of the Labour Party. He can often be spotted pounding the streets of Islington, door knocking his neighbours.  He is an elected Councillor for Canonbury Ward, Borough of Islington, and the Executive Member for Community Safety.

Dr Woolf has held numerous Labour Party positions in both Haringey and Islington: Chair, Campaigns Organiser, Secretary and Political Education Officer. He has also worked with the think-tank, CentreForum, now the Education Policy Institute, developing research into national service.

He has worked with numerous MPs: Catherine West, Emily Thornberry, Daniel Zeichner, Vicky Foxcroft and Susy Stride PPC.

While researching his PhD, John ran as a Council Candidate in Highgate, Haringey, in 2014. There had never been a Labour Councillor in Highgate but in 2014 Labour came 97 votes short of winning a seat (in 2010, Labour were 1,497 votes short): John and the Labour team secured one of the best results for Labour in Highgate, ever; the Conservatives, who controlled Highgate for 12 years before the Lib Dems, came in third place.
